The semantic split between ohagi and botamochi is one of those Japanese distinctions even native speakers will debate.

Mid-Sep (varies by lunar) · Tradition
Mid-autumn moon viewing — the night the moon is at its visually best on the old lunar calendar (usually mid-September, sometimes early October). Households set out small white tsukimi-dango (15 of them, stacked in a pyramid), susuki (silver grass), and seasonal fruit. The TV evening news will sometimes show the moon live for a beat. People actually step outside to look.
