The country closes the year in a sequence of small obligations. Year-end drinking parties at the office, the year's deep cleaning of the whole house, soba noodles at 11 PM on the 31st, then 108 temple bells for the year's accumulated worldly desires.

Early-mid Dec · Tradition
Year-end gift to people you're indebted to — bosses, clients, in-laws, the family doctor. Department-store gift sections run a full operation for this: ham assortments, beer cases, oil sets, dried-fruit boxes, all packaged with the store's gift wrap and shipped directly. The unspoken rule is to spend in the ¥3,000-5,000 range, and the recipient does not acknowledge the gift — that would imply they were keeping score.

The shortest day. The seasonal household ritual is a yuzu-yu — a hot bath with whole yuzu citrus fruit floating in it, six to ten of them, the skin lightly bruised so the oil releases into the water. The dinner pairing is kabocha (Japanese pumpkin) simmered in dashi. Both are folk practices for resisting winter colds; both also genuinely smell and taste like the day.

Christmas in Japan is not a family or religious event — it's a date night. Couples reserve restaurant tables months out, fancy hotels run "Christmas dinner" packages, illumination installations across major cities draw crowds. Christmas Eve is the bigger of the two nights. The food formula is strangely specific: KFC chicken bucket (reserve early or wait 90 minutes) and a strawberry-cream Christmas cake from a bakery.
Dec 31 · Tradition
Last day of the year. Households finish ōsōji (the year-end deep clean), eat toshikoshi-soba (year-crossing soba — long noodles for long life, eaten before midnight), and switch the TV to Kōhaku Uta Gassen (NHK's annual music battle, since 1951). At midnight, Buddhist temples ring their bell 108 times — one for each worldly desire to be dispelled — and the year quietly turns.
All of December · Tradition
Year-end forgetting party. Companies, teams, clubs, college friend groups all hold one — restaurants run them as a separate booking category, often two-hour all-you-can-drink courses (nomihōdai) priced per head. The izakaya floor of any decent restaurant is full from the second week of December through the 30th. Sober is the exception.
